Indigenous Data and Knowledge Statement

The Indigenous Equity Lab recognizes that Indigenous data, knowledge, and stories are deeply connected to Indigenous peoples, lands, languages, and governance systems.

Our research practices are grounded in respect for Indigenous self-determination, community relationships, and ethical research engagement.

Where research involves Indigenous communities, the Indigenous Equity Lab seeks to follow principles of Indigenous data governance and community-led research. These approaches recognize that Indigenous peoples have the right to govern how data about their communities, lands, and knowledge is collected, used, stored, and shared.

Our work acknowledges and respects established Indigenous data governance frameworks, including:

  • The First Nations Principles of OCAP® (Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession)
  • The CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, Ethics)

These principles emphasize that Indigenous communities maintain authority over their information and knowledge, and that research must be conducted with respect for community protocols, consent, and governance.

Research conducted through the Indigenous Equity Lab follows institutional research ethics processes and prioritizes respectful collaboration with Indigenous communities, knowledge holders, and partners.
