Indigenous Women's Health

indigenous women's health

We work alongside Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse people to advance health research that reflects their knowledge, priorities, and lived experiences.

Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse people carry knowledge, leadership, and resilience that sustain families and communities. Yet their health experiences continue to be shaped by the ongoing impacts of colonial violence, racism, and inequities in access to culturally safe care. Our work in Indigenous Women’s Health focuses on understanding these realities and supporting Indigenous-led approaches that strengthen well-being across the life course.

Community-Driven Research

This basket of work centres the voices, stories, and priorities of Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse people. Through community partnerships, interviews, gatherings, and arts-based methods, we work collaboratively to understand experiences with health systems, reproductive, sexual, maternal, and mid-life health, and the social conditions that shape health and well-being.

Culturally Safe Care

Our research seeks to identify pathways toward care that is culturally safe, trauma-informed, and grounded in Indigenous knowledge systems. By documenting barriers and highlighting community strengths, we aim to inform policies and practices that improve health care experiences and outcomes.

From Knowledge to Action

The knowledge generated through this work contributes to policy dialogue, health system improvement, and Indigenous-led solutions that support equity, dignity, and self-determination in health. Our work is grounded in the calls to justice in the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBQIA+ Peoples report.
