System Transformation

system transformation

We work to transform health and research systems so they reflect Indigenous leadership, respect Indigenous knowledge, and support lasting equity.

Many of the inequities experienced by Indigenous communities are rooted in systems—health systems, research systems, and policy systems—that were not designed with Indigenous perspectives or priorities in mind. Our System Transformation work focuses on re-imagining these systems to support rematriation, equity, respect, and Indigenous leadership.

Decolonizing Research and Practice

Transforming systems requires rethinking how knowledge is created and used. This basket of work explores decolonizing approaches to research, including Indigenous methodologies, community-driven priorities, and ethical partnerships that respect Indigenous data sovereignty and governance.

Advancing System Transformation

System change requires structural change within institutions. Our work engages with health organizations, policy makers, and research institutions to identify opportunities for change that improve equity and cultural safety. This work is grounded in the calls to action and recommendations from foundational reports, including the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the BC Declaration on the Rights on Indigenous Peoples Act, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Building New Pathways

By bringing together Indigenous communities, researchers, health decision-makers, and policy makers we work toward systems that are responsive, accountable, and grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing and being, and that support self-determination.
